Tartans Top Redhawks in D-III City Game

McCANDLESS, Pa. - Carnegie Mellon trounced women's basketball tonight in a non-conference battle, 57-47. The Redhawks struggled on both end of the floor. Offensively, they made 20-56 FG (36%) and 5-23 three-pointers (22%). La Roche has shot under 40% from the field in four out of five games so far this season, scoring less than 50 points in three of those contests. Defensively, LRU allowed CMU to shoot a season best 23-44 FG (53%) to capture their fourth win of the season. In their first six games, the Tartans never shot above 45% from the field. Tonight's contest between the local D-III University's was the first since 2016.

How it Happened

La Roche came out the gates swinging, starting the first quarter on an 11-2 run knocking down 5-7 shots from the field. The Redhawks were able to maintain that lead and finished the first quarter ahead 19-11. Senior forward Jenna Cole (North Huntington, PA/Norwin) finished the quarter with 6 points on 3-4 FG. 

In the second quarter, LRU lost it's offensive momentum. The Redhawks were only able to score three points in 10 minutes, shooting 1-8 (13%) from the field. CMU scored 8 points in the second to bring the game within one possession. La Roche headed into the half ahead 22-19.

The Tartans opened up the third quarter on a 14-7 run on 5-7 FG, taking their first lead of the contest up 33-29. After a much needed timeout, the Redhawks went on a 9-2 in the last four minutes of the quarter to regain the lead and go up 38-35 heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Sophomore forward Dasja Anderson (Twinsburg, OH /Twinsburg) scored 6 points on a perfect 2-2 FG and 2-2 FT in the quarter.

In the final quarter of the game, CMU outscored La Roche 22-9, shooting an impressive 8-13 (62%) from the field. Tonight's game is the second this season that the Redhawks entered the fourth quarter ahead and lost the game.

Inside the Box Score

Junior guard Ayanna Mazyck (Philadelphia, PA/Harford CC) scored a team-high 10 points on 4-11 FG. It is her third straight game finishing in double-digit scoring figures. Mazyck also finished with a team-high 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, a block and 6 turnovers.

La Roche attempted a season-low four free-throws knocking down two of them. The Redhawks attempted at least 13 free-throws in their first four games of the season.

Excluding last weeks game vs. Penn State Altoona where La Roche made 9-17 (53%) 3-PT, the Redhawks have shot a combined 22-92 (24%) from beyond the arc this season. Despite shooting poorly from deep, the Redhawks have attempted 21.8 three-pointers per game.

Freshman forward Dashá Jackson (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) had another solid outing off the bench, finishing with 6 points on 3-5 FG and 5 rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

Three Tartans scored in double-digit figures, led by Sophomore guard Leah Weslock who finished with a season-high 20 points on 7-10 FG.
