La Roche Splits AMCC Games of the Week

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The La Roche University softball team split with Mt. Aloysius in their final regular season home conference doubleheader. Devan Smith hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth in game one to propel LRU to a 3-2 win. It was the Redhawks first extra innings game and win of the season. In game two, Mt. Aloysius scored all five of their runs in the first two innings and won 5-2.

Now 7-9 overall and 7-7 in conference play, the Redhawks  remain in the number four spot in the AMCC standings. La Roche has split five of their last six doubleheaders.

Game One - La Roche 3, Mt. Aloysius 2

Pitching

Alexa Young pitched her ninth complete game of the season and picked up her third straight win. Young is now 5-4 on the year. In 8.0 innings, Young struckout eight batters, walked one and gave up just two earned runs. Young has fanned eight batters in back-to-back starts.

How it Happened

Mt. Aloysius got on the board first in the top of the second when they scored on a groundout. The next three innings would be scoreless for both teams.

The visitors scored their second and final run of the game in the top of sixth on an RBI single. Mt. Aloysius led 2-0.

The Redhawks started their comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Ashtin Hoover got things started with a single up the middle. Then Devan Smith reached first on an error and Hoover advanced.

With two runners on, Alexis Myers hit an RBI single to dead center to cut the deficit to one run. Lyndsi Urani would then tie the game with a sacrifice fly to score Smith.

Neither team would score in the seventh and the game would go to extra innings.

Then in the bottom of the eighth with a runner on third, Devan Smith hit another walk-off RBI single into left center to propel LRU to a 3-2 win.

Inside the Box Score

Devan Smith had her second walk-off single in the last three games. Smith RBI single in the bottom of the eighth was her only hit of the day.

Ashtin Hoover went 3-for-4 and scored a run.

The Redhawks batted 7-28 (.250) and the Mounties went 5-27 (.185).

Game Two - La Roche 2, Mt. Aloysius 5

Pitching

Ashtin Hoover got the start on the mound. She pitched just one inning but was attributed with all five earned runs. Lyndsi Urani came in to relieve Hoover in the second. In 4.0 innings pitched, Urani had two strikeouts, no walks, three hits and no earned runs. Alexa Young closed out the final two innings and gave up just one hit.

How it Happened

The Mounties got off to a hot start in game two, scoring four of their five runs in the top of the first. A big part of Mt. Aloysius' first inning success was credited to five stolen bases in the first inning and eight overall.

The Redhawks got on the board in the bottom of the second after Alexis Myers hit an RBI single to right center to score Devan Smith. LRU trailed 1-4. 

Mt. Aloysius addded their fifth and final run of the game in the top of the second on an RBI double.

Kelly Denk scored LRU's second and final run when she reached on an error to score Lyndsi Urani.

Inside the Box Score

Alexis Myers went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Myers has notched at least one RBI in three of the Redhawks last four games and is currently on an 11-game hitting streak.

Kelly Denk went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Denk has recorded five extra base hits in her last four games and is has notched two or more hits five of her last six games. Denk is currently on a six game hitting streak.

Lyndsi Urani went 2-for-3 with a double and a scored run. Urani has had at least one hit in five of her last six games.

Devan Smith went 1-for-4 with a double.

La Roche will travel to first place Pitt Bradford for their final regular season conference doubleheader of the season on Saturday, May 1st. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
