Preview: Softball Takes on Alfred St. & Hilbert

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The La Roche University Softball team is slated to play two conference doubleheaders this weekend against Alfred State on Saturday, April 24th at 11:30 a.m. and Hilbert College on Sunday, April 25th at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's games were moved up in anticipation of rain later in the day.

The Redhawks three seniors, Meghan Haynes, Devan Smith and Alexa Young will be recognized on Saturday in a pre-game ceremony beginning at 11:00 a.m.

La Roche News and Notes

  • The Redhawks are 4-6 overall this season and 4-4 in conference play. They rank tied for fourth in the conference with Pitt Greensburg.
  • LRU was swept by Penn St. Behrend last Saturday in the AMCC Games of the Week 9-1, 4-3.
  • Freshman Ashtin Hoover ranks first in the conference and tied 27th in the nation with .563 batting average. Hoover has had at least one hit in all 10 games this season and six games with multiple hits.
  • Senior Devan Smith leads the team with 14 RBI. Her 12 RBI and .484 batting average in conference play both rank fourth in the AMCC. Smith also leads the Redhawks in extra base hits (four doubles, one triple).
  • Senior Alexa Young has carried a majority of the pitching load. In 44.0 IP, Young has fanned 24 batters and walked just eight. In six complete games this season, she has 2-4 record and two saves.
  • As a unit, the Redhawks have batted .305 in conference play

Alfred State News and Notes

  • The Pioneers are 2-16 overall this season and 0-10 in conference play. They currently rank last in the AMCC standings.
  • ASC started their season 2-0 but have dropped 16 straight games since. Most recently to Penn St. Behrend on April 20th in a doubleheader 9-1 and 14-1.
  • Kailey Wonica leads the pioneers in hits (30), batting average (.492), doubles (6), on-base percentage (.508), slugging percentage (.590), stolen bases (5) and ranks second in RBI (9). Her batting average ranks fourth in the AMCC.
  • Sarah Boyce (.366) and Krista Lovell (.326) are the other two Pioneers batting over .300. Lovell leads the team with 12 RBI.
  • Brittany Fisher and Audrey Farrell have split the pitching duties. Fisher has gone 58.2 innings, striking out 39 batters, walking 13 and posting a 6.80 ERA. Farrell has pitched 53.0 innings, striking out 28 batters, walking 47 and posting a 9.11 ERA.

Series History

  • Saturday will be the inaugural meeting for La Roche and Alfred State. 2020-21 is Alfred State's first year participating in the AMCC softball league.
  • The Pioneers first became a team in 2013-14. La Roche formed their first softball team in 1989-90

Hilbert News and Notes

  • The Hawks played their first and only two games of the season against D'Youville on March 20th. They lost both games 0-10, 4-11.
  • Hilbert will play two conference doubleheaders back-to-back at Pitt Bradford (4/23) and at Penn St. Behrend (4/25) before traveling to Pittsburgh, PA.
  • The Hawks were picked to finish 8th in the preseason coaches poll, one spot behind La Roche.
  • Named as "Players to Watch in the AMCC Preseason Poll were senior Melanie Basile and sophomore Bailey Budziszewski. In 2019, Basile hit .333 with 24 hits, a.351 obp and a 1.000 fielding percentage. In the shortened season last year she was voted team MVP. Budziszewski did not play in 2019 due to a hip surgery. She returned in the shortened 2020 season to hit .273. Now fully healthy she looks set to become the team's power hitter.

Series History

  • The Redhawks are 14-4 all-time against Hilbert dating back to 2011.
  • Hilbert won the last two games on April 7th, 2019 4-2 and 2-1.
  • Prior to those two losses, La Roche had won 10 of the last 11 games against the Hawks.
