Defending Champion La Roche Tabbed Second In AMCC Preseason Poll

NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. – La Roche University men's basketball was selected second in the 2023-24 AMCC Preseason Poll, announced by the conference on Thursday.

Fresh off their third AMCC Championship in five years, and their six consecutive appearance in the AMCC Championship game, the Redhawks were placed second after winning the AMCC last season.

The only team to finish ahead of La Roche in the poll is Penn State Altoona, last season's runner-up, who the Redhawks defeated in the AMCC Championship, but also who handed La Roche its lone conference loss during the season.

Rounding out the top five are Penn State Behrend, Hilbert and Pitt-Bradford.

Newcomer Wells earned a sixth-place spot in its first AMCC poll, and rounding out the 10 spots are Pitt-Greensburg, Alfred State, Mount Aloysius and another newcomer to the AMCC, Carlow.

Players to watch for the Redhawks include junior guard Michael Brooks and fellow junior guard Joe Starzynski.

Brooks enters the 2023-24 campaign after averaging nine points and five rebounds per game last season across 30 minutes of action per contest. Brooks ended the season shooting 41% from behind the arc.

Starzynski averaged seven points and three rebounds last season, shooting 46% from the floor and 84% from the free-throw line.

La Roche tips-off the 2023-24 season on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. against Carnegie Mellon.

The AMCC Tournament begins on Tuesday, Feb. 21 with first round matchups at campus sites between seeds #3 vs #6 and #4 and #5, with the top two seeds earning a bye.

The AMCC Championship Round takes place at the top overall seed, beginning with the semifinals on Friday, Feb. 24 and the AMCC Championship game taking place on Saturday, Feb. 25.
