Redhawks Unable To Get Past Pioneers

ALFRED, N.Y. – La Roche volleyball dropped just its second game in its last six on Saturday afternoon, falling to Alfred State 3-0 on the road.

Set one started the way of the Redhawks, holding an early edge of 8-6 of the first 14 points.

The teams would then battle back and forth, with the lead flipping to the Pioneers.

Sitting behind 13-12, La Roche couldn't hold back a surge by Alfred State, as the Pioneers scored eight of the next nine points to open a 21-13 edge and would never allow the red and black to come within four, winning 25-20.

The second set saw Alfred State cruising at the start and through the midway point, leading 17-9.

The Redhawks would pressure the Pioneers, scoring 13 of the next 18 points to even the match at 22-22.

However, three of the final for points went in favor of the host, ending 25-23.

The third set saw La Roche, with its back against the wall, down 2-0 in the match, start out hot, lead 10-5 over the first 15 points.

As time went on, the lead stuck, sitting at 19-15, but a 7-1 run by Alfred State switched the lead, making it 22-20.

The final eight points would go in pairs, two for the Redhawks, two to the Pioneers and then again in that sequence as the match ended with a 26-24 score and victory for the hosts.

Kalli Grine continued her great stretch of play with 11 kills, a .296 hitting percentage and a double-double chipping in 12 digs.

In the assist box, freshman Brooke Bednarski led the team with 18, while defensively, fifth year Mackenzie Kerkan led the red and black with 13 digs. Kylie Fehlman chipped in on defense with four solo blocks.

The Redhawks continue their brief road trip on Tuesday, Oct. 22 as they face Pitt-Greensburg at 7 p.m.
