Redhawks Sweep Penn State Beaver

BEAVER, Pa. – La Roche volleyball returned to action for the first time in nine days on Monday night against Penn State Beaver and did so in dominate fashion, winning 3-0.

Set one was the closest finish of the three sets, as the Redhawks came through with the 25-20 win.

La Roche opened quick, holding a 6-1 lead over the first seven points of the match.

The Lions countered, scoring 10 of the next 15 to tie the match 11-11, followed by a 4-0 Redhawks run to regain the edge, but a 5-1 run for Beaver followed to make it 16-16 just past the midway point.

The red and black snapped the tie with a 5-0 run to go over 20 points at 21-16, and the teams would alternate points the rest of the way to close the set.

Set two was the widest margin of the night as La Roche strolled to a 25-14 victory.

The Redhawks wasted no time jumping ahead 7-2, however the Lions would chip away slightly making it 10-7.

A 6-0 run by the red and black followed, opening a 16-7 lead, which would then flip to 16-12 after a 5-0 Beaver run.

From that point on it was all La Roche, scoring nine of the final 11 points to solidify the 2-0 match lead.

Set three again saw the Redhawks push ahead, leading 5-1 early, but this time, the Lions battled back to hold a 9-8 lead, its only lead of the night besides a 1-0 lead to open the third set.

A few points later, the red and black were holding a 14-13 edge, then utilized a 7-0 run to open a 21-13 lead and help cruise to the finish line, winning the final set of the night 25-16.

Megan Bologna led the offense on the night, picking up eight kills, hitting .429% on the night. Nine other players picked up at least one kill, with Kylie Fehlman following Bologna with five.

Brooke Bednarski ended the night with a double-double, dishing out 18 assists and reeling in a team high 13 digs. Mackenzie Kerkan also hit double figures in digs with 10.

The front line defensively picked up 10 total blocks on the night, with Fehlman picking up four and Audrey Work ending the night with three.

The Redhawks are right back on the floor on Tuesday, Oct. 8 as they begin AMCC play against Mt. Aloysius. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
