Redhawks Fall to Mt. Aloysius in Five Set Heartbreaker

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The La Roche College Redhawks dropped a heartbreaker on Wednesday evening. La Roche entered set 4 with a 2-1 lead, but Mt. Aloysius overcame the deficit to earn the 3-2 victory (25-20, 20-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-13). The Redhawks fall to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in the AMCC.

Mt. Aloysius jumped out to an 11-6 lead which forced Coach Bajuszik to burn a timeout. The Mounties upped their advantage to seven, but four straight points including a Hannah Scott serving ace got La Roche back into it.

Mt. Aloysius responded by taking control of the net. La Roche denied multiple set points, but the Mounties earned the 25-20 set 1 victory.

Mt. Aloysius opened set 2 scoring 7 of the first 10 points. The Redhawks answered with five straight points including two Laura Nath kills. Kayla Gramm threw down a kill to put the Redhawks ahead 10-9.

La Roche strung together a run taking a commanding 21-16 lead. The Redhawks took advantage of Mountie mistakes while Ingrid Spear and Bethany Nulph spiked down kills.

The Mounties made it interesting, but Nath slammed down a kill for a 25-20 set 2 win.

The Redhawks came out strong in set 3, but Mt. Aloysius recovered and forced a timeout at 11-8. La Roche scored 5 of the next 7 points and Erin Connor tied it with an ace.

La Roche stretched their lead to 21-18 on a Spear kill. The Mounties tied it at 22-22, but a Nath kill closed it at 25-23.

The Mounties opened set 4 with six straight points. La Roche started to make their presence felt at the net and got back to 9-5. However they were unable to find their rhythm and the Mounties forced a deciding fifth set.

The final set went back and forth. Neither team led by more than one when teams switched sides. Mt. Aloysius took a two point lead, but a Sarah Storino ace got them back within one. The Redhawks continued to battle with Nath providing a pair of kills for a 13-12 game. The Redhawks stayed alive for a 14-13 game, but Mt. Aloysius closed it at 15-13.

Nath finished with 22 kills and Storino 35 assists. Scott finished with a game-high 39 digs and Spear 5 blocks.
