Host La Roche Falls Twice in Saturday Tri-Match

Pittsburgh Pa – The La Roche Volleyball team hosted two visiting teams for a tri match, falling short in five sets in both. The Earlham College Quakers and Oberlin College Yoemen travelled to the Kerr Fitness Center with the host Lady Redhawks falling to Earlham in the early game in a thrilling fifth set (25-22, 26-24,12-25, 21-25, 11-15).

Early in the match, Hannah Scott and her twenty-seven digs led the way as they received Earlham attack to set up their offense. Laura Nath led the way with twenty-two kills. Toni Torchia added a couple of aces to bring the Redhawks to an early lead. However, Earlham found some energy in a critical third set and led (10-2) without looking back. The teams went back and forth before the Quakers gained control for the victory.

The two visitors played a neutral site game for the second match of the day. Oberlin's strong play around the net led them to a 3-0 match sweep of Earlham (26-24, 25-20, 25-20).

In the finally, La Roche played Oberlin in another five game match full of momentum swings. Oberlin jumped out to two strong victories in the first two sets (25-10, 25-17). The determined Lady Redhawks clawed back with a close (25-23) third set, and won the fourth (25-15). Oberlin pulled away (15-9) in the final set of the afternoon. Dana Thomas and Lexi Mitchell continued their strong play on the outside finishing with nine and fourteen kills respectively.  Sarah Storino and Maddie Gestrich set up the offense for La Roche with seventeen and eighteen assists.

La Roche will continue their season on the road Monday September 18 at Thiel.
