PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche women's soccer welcomed fans for the 2024 home opener on Wednesday, but unfortunately saw a late lead slip away, falling to Waynesburg 2-1.
The first half was a stalemate, as neither team could open the scoring, keeping it 0-0 at halftime.
The Yellow Jackets were the aggressor in the opening 45-minutes, outshooting the Redhawks 11-1 and 6-1 on net.
Out of the break, La Roche would hit the scoreboard first, as Alexis Nudds buried a penalty kick goal at 48:44 to make it a 1-0 game.
With under 20 minutes to play, Waynesburg finally broke through to even the match at 1-1 with a goal at 71:35.
Just 6:51 later, the Yellow Jackets managed to just narrowly squeak one past Redhawks freshman goalkeeper Danielle Dominick for the game-winning goal.
Junior goalkeeper, Julianna Hornikel, played the first half, making five saves in the game. Dominick would face five shots as well, making three saves.
On the offensive end, Nudds led the team and matched the game-high with four shots, placing two on goal.
La Roche now prepares for a three-game road trip that begins Friday, Sept. 6, when the Redhawks face Washington & Jefferson. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
