Redhawks Clinch Playoff Berth In Senior Day Draw

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche women's soccer clinched a playoff berth on Senior Day as they battled Hilbert to a 1-1 draw.

Prior to the game, the Redhawks recognized seven seniors for their dedication to the La Roche women's soccer program.

It didn't take long for the Redhawks to take the lead, as one of the seven seniors, Alexandra Mecchia scored at the 12:19 mark of the first half, assisted by Finnleigh Gould to make it a 1-0 game, which stood into halftime.

Out of the half, the Hawks fired back to even the match 1-1, scoring just 4:08 into the second half.

The remainder of the contest was a defensive battle, as shots and chances on goal were limited, leading to the playoff clinching draw for La Roche.

Shots were limited throughout, as the Redhawks held a slight 8-6 edge, as well as in shots on goal, 4-3.

Goalkeeper Julianna Hornikel faced two of the three shots on goal, making one save.

On the offensive end, Mecchia was the team leader with four shots and two shots on goal.

The next time out for La Roche will be on Saturday, Oct. 28, but must wait until Tuesday to find out where and when.

There is a number of scenarios in play, stemming from a Tuesday, Oct. 24 matchup between Penn State Altoona and Mt. Aloysius.

If Penn State Altoona and Mt. Aloysius tie, the Redhawks will host an AMCC Tournament First Round match, holding the second tiebreak of tying Hilbert with PSU Altoona losing to Hilbert, and would meet PSU Altoona, who they drew 0-0 on Sept. 26.

If either PSU Altoona or Mt. Aloysius wins straight up, La Roche will be the five seed and travel to face the winner of the game.
