Late Bobcat Goal Upends Redhawks 3-2

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche women's soccer once again had its potential to clinch a playoff spot put on hold, as a late Pitt-Greensburg goal halted the Redhawks, 3-2.

Up against the undefeated in AMCC play Bobcats, La Roche was stellar throughout the afternoon, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, thanks to a Victoria Biagetti goal off a corner kick assist from Alexandra Mecchia.

The first half saw the Redhawks with two shots, while limiting UPG to just five.

Out of the half, the Bobcats scored at the 54:05 mark to tie the game, which stood until 70:22 when Alexis Nudds scored from roughly 30 yards out to give the lead back to La Roche, 2-1.

Unfortunately for the Redhawks, the UPG offensively flurry was tough to hold off, as the Bobcats scored 4:42 after Nudds' goal to tie it 2-2, then again at 85:38 to take the lead and stave off a very game La Roche squad.

It was UPG who held the edge in shots, 19-4, picking up 14 shots in the second half, while the shot on goal total read 14 for the Bobcats and three for the Redhawks.

Goalkeeper Julianna Hornikel was remarkable in net, stopping 11 of 14 shots she faced, with two of the three goals coming off an initial diving save and a leaping save, in which the ball still managed to take a bounce of the post and crossbar, right to a UPG player.

On the offensive end, Mecchia had a team-high two shots, while her, Nudds and Biagetti combined for the three shots on goal.

The Redhawks close the season on Saturday, Oct. 21 as it is Senior Day, with opening kick slated for 1 p.m against Hilbert, in a must win game.
