PITTSBURGH, Pa. -  In their season and home opener, La Roche defeated the visiting Geneva Golden Tornadoes by a score of 3-1 in an epic matchup.

LRU struck first in the 21st minute with a goal from sophomore forward Alexandra Mecchia (Pittsburgh, Pa / Moon) and an assist from forward Alondra Gonzalez (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk). Gonzalez took advantage of a breakaway and shot the ball towards the goal  and Mecchia ran up the middle of the inner box and buried it.

In the second half, La Roche struck again in the 63rd minute with goal by junior forward Hannah Miller (Pittsburgh, PA / Avonworth), assisted by Mecchia. Miller shot a laser of a ball from the top of the outside box.

Shortly after, the Golden Tornadoes answered back when senior midfielder Lexi Meese put the ball left of the net with an assist by Sophomore midfielder Katie Bodenmiller to shorten the Redhawks lead to one.

But Alexandra Mecchia was on fire and gave the Redhawks another goal in the 77th minute with an assist by junior midfielder Leticia Alcaraz Romero (Madrid, Spain / Margarita Salas). Mecchia took the ball low along the goal line, spun around the defender and absolutely crushed the ball from the left side of the outside box into the right side of the goal. Mecchia finished with an impressive three points on the night.

LRU possessed the ball a majority of the contest. The Redhawks notched 23 shots (11 on goal) compared to Geneva's 7 (4 on goal).

Next up: The Redhawks travel to Oakland, PA to take on Carnegie Mellon this Friday at 7:00 p.m.
