Behrend Tops La Roche in AMCC Conference Opener

PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche College women's soccer team entered halftime even with Penn State Behrend, but the Lions came alive in the second half and earned the 5-2 victory. The Redhawks fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the AMCC.

Penn State Behrend found an early goal, but the Redhawks stayed focused and played within their gameplan. They did a great job going on the counterattack and Alondra Gonzalez came through with the equalizer in the fifteenth minute. Piper Claypool chipped the ball over the Behrend backline and Gonzalez sent it past the keeper.

Goalkeeper Jessica Welka got a little bit of help from the crossbar in the twenty-eighth minute. Claypool and Marissa Johnson followed with shots that forced the Behrend keeper to make saves. Teams were even with 7 shots apiece at the half.

Welka made a leaping save to deny Behrend in forty-ninth minute. She then made a diving stop in the fifty-seventh minute, but the Lions struck for a 2-1 lead just a minute later. Behrend took a 3-1 lead ten minutes. They added a fourth goal in the sixty-eighth minute.

Welka continued to battle in net, making a leaping save in the seventy-fifth minute. Jessica Nakamura gave the Redhawks a chance, striking a corner kick into the top right corner of the net. Behrend answered with a strike and earned the 5-2 victory.

Gonzalez and Nakamura each had goals and Claypool an assist. Welka made 6 saves.
