Second Half Lifts Muskingum Past La Roche

PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche women's soccer team fell to 1-1 after dropping a 4-1 game to Muskingum on Tuesday evening. The Redhawks had entered halftime in a scoreless tie, but Muskingum found a goal early in the second half and hung on.

Early on, goalkeeper Jess Welka made a terrific save, cutting off a tough angle to keep the game scoreless. Tea Miksch cleared an open net in the sixteenth minute while Sam Chambers and Piper Claypool each had early chances in the offensive end.

Teams paused for a needed waterbreak at the twenty minute mark and Coach Lozano urged his squad to take control. La Roche came out of the break with three quality chances, with the Redhawks nearly missing converting a corner kick. Welka denied Muskingum a goal after a scramble in the box in the twenty-ninth minute.

La Roche outshot Muskingum 12-11 in the first half and Welka made four saves.

The Redhawks continued to provide pressure, leading to scoring chances in the offensive zone. Gonzalez nearly found a goal in the fifty-second minute, forcing Muskingum to push a save into the sidenet. Kerri Phillis followed with a pair of shots on goal, but Muskingum broke the scoreless goal in the sixty-third minute.

Muskingum added a pair of goals in the 72nd and 73rd minutes, but Gonzalez broke through with a tally in the eighty-third minute. The Muskies added their fourth goal on a penalty kick.
