
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The best start to season continued for La Roche women's lacrosse on Saturday, taking down Spalding in mercy rule fashion, 17-7.
It was all Redhawks in the first quarter, scoring five of the six goals in the frame.
Only 58 seconds elapsed before La Roche found of the back of the net, when Jasey Reiser scored a player up.
Over the next 6:31, the lead grew to 3-0 behind an Alecia D'Urso goal and a second scored by Reiser.
Spalding's lone first quarter goal was scored at 5:23 and was followed by a pair of D'Urso goals to close the opening 15-minute scoring.
The Golden Eagles got themselves back in the game in the second quarter, scoring three of the first four goals and four of the six in the frame.
Spalding started the scoring just 12 seconds in, then Reiser countered at 13:04, scoring free position and a player up.
The Golden Eagles struck for two following, cutting the deficit to 6-4, then D'Urso, at 7:30 scored her fourth of the game.
Spalding would score the final goal of the quarter and the La Roche lead sat at 7-5 into the half.
Out of the break, La Roche dominated to the tune of 10-2 to put the mercy rule into effect, late in the fourth quarter.
In the third, the Redhawks scored four of the five goals, with Reiser collecting two, D'Urso scoring her fifth, assisted by Reiser and Jade Fuccaro scoring her first of the game, also assisted by Reiser.
The fourth saw the Redhawks pick up six more goals, including two more by Fuccaro, two by Kiki Nemcek (one assisted by Fuccaro), one by Reiser and one by D'Urso (assisted by Reiser).
Reiser was remarkable in the victory for La Roche, picking up six goals and three assists for nine points on the day, while also picking up six draw controls and two ground balls.
D'Urso continued her hot start with yet another six goal outing, while Fucarro netted three more in the contest.
In goal, Julianna Hornikel halted 11 of 18 shots that came her way, scooped up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
Nemcek led the team with five ground balls to go with her two goals, five draw controls and one caused turnover, followed by four ground balls from D'Urso.
La Roche has a week off before returning to action, when they host St. Vincent on Saturday, Mar. 15. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
