Redhawks Overcome Early Struggles To Take Down Pioneers

ALFRED, N.Y.  La Roche women's basketball overcame early struggles on Saturday afternoon to take down Alfred State, 70-61 on the road in AMCC play.

It a difficult opening quarter for the Redhawks. Sitting tied 7-7 with 3:31 remaining, the red and black allowed a closing run of 10-2 and trailed 17-9 through 10 minutes.

The red and black fell behind by as many as 10 in the second quarter, but managed to battle back on the late stages to trail just 29-26 at the half.

Out of the break, the Pioneers continued to hold the edge and held it by as many as six and as small as two at multiple points.

La Roche finally pushed forward in the final 90 seconds with a 6-0 to take a 48-46 lead into the fourth.

That 6-0 run grew to a 13-0 run, as the Redhawks built a 55-46 lead, scoring the first seven of the final stanza.

Alfred State crawled back to within three with 2:24 to go, but a run of 7-0 by the red and black pushed the margin back to 65-55 and they proceeded to coast to the finish. 

For the game, La Roche shot 39.3% (24-for-61) from the floor and 7-for-21 (33.3%) from deep. From the charity stripe, they went 15-for-18 (83.3%).

On the other side, the Pioneers went on to shoot 35.1% (20-for-57) from the field, 6-for-16 from deep (37.5%) and 15-for-23 (65.2%) from the foul line.

Three Redhawks ended the night in double figures, led by Dasja Anderson's game-high, 19 points.

Jazmine Dunn followed with a loaded stat line of 18 points, five rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks.

Kiyanna Dowling followed with 17 points behind 5-for-6 shooting behind the arc.

La Roche returns to the court Wednesday, Dec. 11 to close out the 2024 portion of AMCC play in a Championship rematch against defending AMCC Tournament Champions, Penn State Behrend. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
