Three-Time Defending Champion Redhawks Selected Second In AMCC Preseason Poll

NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. – La Roche University women's basketball was selected second in the 2023-24 AMCC Preseason Poll, announced by the conference on Thursday.

Fresh off their third consecutive AMCC Tournament Championship the Redhawks were placed second after winning the AMCC regular season championship as well last season.

The only team to finish ahead of La Roche in the poll is Penn State Behrend, last season's runner-up, who the Redhawks defeated in the AMCC Championship in a 71-70 thriller, takes the top spot.

Rounding out the top five are Penn State Altoona, Pitt-Greensburg and in a tie for fifth are Hilbert and newcomer Carlow in its first AMCC poll.

Rounding out the poll in spots 7-10 are Alfred State, Mount Aloysius, Pitt-Bradford another newcomer to the AMCC, Wells.

Players to watch for the Redhawks include senior guard Machia Hairston and junior guard/forward Makayla Abram.

Hairston enters the new season after earning AMCC First Team All-Conference honors, leading La Roche in rebounding at 10.6 per game and was second on the team in scoring with 15.3 per contest.

Abram, an AMCC Second Team All-Conference selection a year ago was the third leading scorer for the Redhawks, averaging 13.5 points and six rebounds per game.

La Roche tips-off the 2023-24 season on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. against Franciscan.

The AMCC Tournament begins on Tuesday, Feb. 21 with first round matchups at campus sites between seeds #3 vs #6 and #4 and #5, with the top two seeds earning a bye.

The AMCC Championship Round takes place at the top overall seed, beginning with the semifinals on Friday, Feb. 24 and the AMCC Championship game taking place on Saturday, Feb. 25.
