Redhawks Open Season With Doubleheader In Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. - La Roche softball began its 2025 season with a doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida. Game one was a close call, but the Redhawks couldn't hold off SUNY Cobleskill, falling 8-6. Game two was a tough one, dropping the matchup to RIT, 14-1 in five innings.

Game One: SUNY Cobleskill 8 La Roche 6

It was La Roche striking first in the 2025 opener, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.

Maura Wade started the scoring with an RBI single, then Emma Bizay followed with one of her own to cross Wade.

Cobleskill responded in the bottom of the second, plating five runs to take a 5-2 lead.

The Redhawks chipped away with a run in the top of the third on anothe Bizay RBI single, then scored another in the fourth to trim the deficit to 5-4, when Wade picked up her second RBI single.

La Roche would regain the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs in the inning, pushing the score to 6-5.

Unfortunately, Cobleskill would score three in response in the bottom of the sixth to go back ahead, 8-6 and take the victory.

Kynnydy Lewis got the start and in two innings, allowed five runs (one earned), three hits, walked two and struck out two.

Finley Hohn took the loss in relief, allowing three runs, seven hits, two walks and one strikeout across 3.1 innings, while Klover Haberthier struck out one in 0.2 inning.

Offensively, Wade ended the game a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored, while Bizay finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Brooke Murgenovich also had multiple hits with two.

Game Two: RIT 14 La Roche 1 F/5

Unfortunately, game two started well for La Roche but the tide shifted abruptly to the opposition.

Once again, the Redhawks struck in the first inning, as Wade picked up her fourth RBI of the day, driving in the lone run of the game on an RBI single.

RIT was able to push ahead in the top of the third with four runs, then punctuated the contest in the top of the fourth, plating 10 runs to seal the shortened victory.

Haberthier got the start and took the loss, allowing four runs, five hits, two walks and struck out three in 2.1 innings.

Hohn and Lewis would each throw 1.1 innings of relief, allowing a combing 10 runs, 12 hits and two walks.

Offensively, Wade, Murgenovich, Lewis and Ashley Huffman each had a single hit.

La Roche returns to action tomorrow, Monday, Mar. 9 with another doubleheader. Game one is set for 9 p.m. against Elms, followed by a 1 p.m. matchup against Wisconsin-Superior.
