Coach Orie Gentile Announces Retirement After 26 Years with La Roche Softball

La Roche Head Coach, Orie Gentile has announced after the season he will be leaving La Roche University for bigger and better things: retirement.
We want to take this time to thank him. He himself built this press box, has made sure the field was pristine, and the athletes in line. Coach personally made sure this program had every opportunity available to be able to succeed. He's dedicated so much time and compassion to this program, and this university we're not sure how anyone else will be able to fill his shoes.

Coach Orie has been with La Roche for 26 seasons, and will be walking away with an overall record of 424-358 for a total of 782 games coached over those 26 seasons.

Coach coached tournament champion teams in 2000 and 2001, and was regular season champion in 2007. He has coached two AMCC Players of the Year, and a plethora more have received all conference honors.

Here are some words from former player, Rachel Steigerwald:

Dear Coach G.,

For 26 years, you have been putting your heart and soul into the LaRoche Women's Softball program. You have built teams that have won championships, players who have succeeded on and off the field, and memories that will last a lifetime. Fortunately, you recruited the four 2003 seniors early in your career, because I'm pretty certain that we prepared you for any and everything you might experience with your future teams. You're welcome.

What you may not realize is that you prepared us for our futures, too. You helped to develop us into strong, confident, and capable women who will never forget all that you taught us. When I look back at my time on this softball field, with you as my coach, my heart will always be filled with gratitude. These were some of the best years of my life, and I can't thank you enough for always believing in me.

Congratulations on an amazing 26 years. LaRoche softball will never be the same without you in that dugout. Although you will no longer be coaching third base, your legacy will live on forever.

Love,

Rachel Steigerwald

He impacted the lives of so many athletes over the years. All of which have said that Coach was always there no matter what the issue is, whether it be personal, academic, or having something to do with softball.

He's been a huge part of the La Roche athletic staff and he will be truly missed. Coach, you are leaving big shoes to fill but we are excited for you to take this next step and we hope you enjoy your retirement. You'll always be a Redhawk!
