Softball Takes One at Pitt Greensburg

GREENSBURG, Pa. - The La Roche University softball team split two games at Pitt Greensburg  in conference play Thursday afternoon. LRU won game one 7-3 and lost game two 4-6. The Redhawks are now 4-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play. With Thursday's win, La Roche is now tied with Pitt Bradford and Penn St. Behrend at the top of the AMCC rankings. The Redhawks will play Behrend this Saturday, April 17th in the AMCC Game of the Week.

Game One - La Roche 7, Pitt Greensburg 3

Alexa Young made her fifth start of the season in game one. Young went the distance and pitched her third complete game of the season. In 7.0 innings, Young had four strikeouts, no walks, and three earned runs. Her 3.18 ERA this season ranks fifth in the conference.

The Redhawks scored four runs on four hits in the fourth and fifth innings and never relinquished the lead.

As a unit, the Redhawks batted .318 (11-35) in game one. Kelly Denk tied her season high with three hits. She went 3-4 with two RBI, a double and a run. 

Devan Smith and Kylee Greig each went 2-4, notched an RBI and scored a run.

Brandi Clyde also had a team-high two RBI and scored a run. Clyde put the Redhawks on the board with a two-run single in the bottom of the first to score Smith and Ashtin Hoover.

Game Two - La Roche 4, Pitt Greensburg 6

Pitt Greensburg scored all six of their runs in game two in the bottom of the second inning. The Bobcats scored on an error with the basses loaded. Then UPG had three straight hits (two singles and a triple) to drive in four more runs. Their final run was scored on another error by the Redhawks.

LRU scored all four of their runs in the top of the fourth in a valiant comeback effort. Alexis Myers got things started with a single to right field. Then Brandi Clyde singled to center. With two runners on, Abby Hoffman hit an RBI single to right field to score the Redhawks first run.

Kelly Denk then reached on an error by the ss to score Clyde. Ashtin Hoover hit the Redhawks final run of the game on an RBI single to center field.

Lyndsi Urani picked up her first loss as a starting pitcher and is now 2-1 on the season. Urani pitched all 6.0 innings, the first complete game of her collegiate career.
