Redhawks Sweep Medaille in Conference Opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Saturday afternoon, the Redhawks earned their first conference home sweep since April 6th, 2018, over three years ago. LRU softball took down Medaille College in today's conference opener doubleheader. The Mavericks were picked to finish two spots ahead of La Roche in the AMCC Preseason Poll. LRU is now 2-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play this season.

Game 1 - La Roche 9, Medaille 2

Senior pitcher Alexa Young was lights out in game one. Young pitched a complete game (7.0 IP). She struckout eight batters, walked one and gave up just two runs and four hits. It's tied for the fourth most strikeouts in a game in Young's collegiate career.

At the plate, LRU was an impressive 12-25 (.480) as a unit. Freshman Ashtin Hoover went a perfect 3-3 with two RBI. Freshman Alexis Myers went 2-3 with a game-high three RBI. Senior Devan Smith went 2-4 and scored two runs. Freshman Lyndsi Urani went 2-3 with a double and two RBI. The white and red struckout just once.

LRU led for the duration of game one.

Game 2 - La Roche 14, Medaille 12

The Redhawks showed their resilience in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Mavericks put up five runs in the first innings as LRU committed two errors. LRU answered by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the first to make it a 5-3 game. In the bottom of the second, La Roche scored five runs and would own the lead the duration of the contests despite two, three run innings from Medaille.

Senior Devan Smith was a perfect 5-5 at the plate, marking a single game career-high. Smith had a double, a triple and four RBI. Junior Brandi Clyde tied Smith with 4 RBI. Junior Kelly Denk was also a perfect 3-3 at the plate and scored a team-high four runs.

On the mound, freshman Lyndsi Urani picked up her first collegiate win and Alexa Young recorded her second career save.

The Redhawks will be on the road for their next four doubleheaders. They play next this Tuesday, April 13 at Penn St. Altoona. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
