Redhawks Collect Two Wins on Day Two

N. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - La Roche softball emerged victorious in both games Tuesday afternoon on day two of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic to improve to 4-0 in 2020, the Redhawks best start since 2010 when they won their first seven games.

LRU defeated St. Joseph (Conn.) 4-2 in the first game despite being outhit by the Bluejays, 10-6. Junior 2B Devan Smith drilled a 2-run single in the bottom of the third to give her team the lead. Alexa Young pitched all seven innings and got the win.

La Roche went home early in game two by dominating Keystone College, 12-4 in just six innings. Sophomore 1B Brandi Clyde shined as she hit 3-4 at the plate and produced a career-high five RBI, including a base clearing triple in the bottom of the 5th. Freshman RHP Carlie Dillon picked up her first collegiate win as she pitched all six innings and struck out nine batters and walked one.

On the Mound

(vs. USJ) - Junior RHP Alexa Young (Altoona, PA/Altoona) improved to 3-0 on the season as she remained calm and cool on the mound in a tight 4-2 win. With three runners and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Young caught the batter looking as she tallied her seventh strikeout and propeled LRU to victory. Young also hit the Redhawks only XBH, a double, in the bottom of the third. (Young: 7.0 IP, 7 K, 1 BB, 2 ER)

(vs. Keystone) - Freshman RHP Carlie Dillon (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Twp) proved her power as she struckout nine batters for the second straight game in route to her first collegiate win. Dillon held the Mighty Macs scoreless through the first three innings and allowed only eight hits. (Dillon: 6.0 IP, 9 K, 1 BB, 4 ER)

At the Plate

(vs. USJ) - The Redhawks drove in four runs on just six hits. Devan Smith accounted for two of those hits. LexiStrasser went 0-3 but drove in the Redhawks first run on a GO. BrandiClyde hit an RBI single in the 6th to put the team up 4-2.

(vs. Keystone) - LRU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Mighty Macs tied the game in the top of the 5th (3-3) before the Redhawks erupted for nine runs in the fifth and sixth inning to conclude the contest in six innings. La Roche recorded a season-high 12 RBI, five of which came from Clyde. Three other Redhawks recorded two RBI (Devan Smith, Meghan Haynes, Kayla Ordos). As a unit, La Roche batted 9-24 (.375) in the win.

NEXT UP: La Roche takes the day off tomorrow before playing their third double-header of the week this Thursday, March 12th against Iowa Wesleyan (11:30 a.m.) and Norwich (1:30 p.m.)
