Redhawks Keep Rolling, Sweep Pitt-Greensburg

PITTSBURGH, PA – The La Roche College softball team picked up a pair of big victories, sweeping Pitt-Greensburg 3-2, 5-3 on Wednesday. The Redhawks have won 6 of their past 7 games.

Starter Kaylee Grassmyer tossed a scoreless first inning and then struck out three batters in the second inning.

The Redhawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning. They had three straight two-out singles up the middle, but a groundout to second base ended the threat.

Pitt-Greensburg grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning. They were threatening in the fourth inning but a force at third base and strikeout kept it a two run game.

La Roche was kept off the board in the fourth and fifth innings, but tied it in the sixth.

Kelsey Plato reached on a fielder's choice and Savannah Leonard drew a walk. Plato and Michaela Geracia, who ran for Leonard, put on a double steal to advance both runners into scoring position. Plato scored on a wild pitch and Geracia tied it on a Kelsey Bayer sacrifice fly.

Alexa Young tossed a perfect top of the seventh to set the Redhawks up for a walk-off in the bottom of the inning. Sydnee DeShong, Ashley Burford, and Andie Lippman hit three straight one-out singles to load the bases for Aubrie Martin. Martin flew out to right field but DeShong scored the winning run on an errant throw.

DeShong went 3 for 3 and scored the winning run. Burford had two hits. Young registered the victory to improve to 6-1.

Game 2:

La Roche grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Lippman was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Martin single to center. Leonard came to the plate and smacked a 2-out single up the middle for a one run lead.

Young used a groundout to get out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning. A Burford infield single scored Alexis Medva in the second, but a lineout to center stranded runners at all three bases.

Lippman made a terrific diving stop to take away an extra base hit in the third inning. Pitt-Greensburg however scored a pair of two-out hits to tie it at 2-2.

The Redhawks regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Leonard and Devan Smith provided singles before Medva sent a pitch into right field for a 4-2 lead.

Young threw scoreless fourth and fifth innings, but Pitt-Greensburg got within a run in the sixth.

Ashley Burford answered the call with a home run deep over the left field scoreboard. Young got out of a jam in the seventh to earn her seventh victory and second of the day.

Medva went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run. Ashley Burford had a 2-run blast.
