La Roche Splits Home Opener With Penn State Behrend

PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche picked up a big victory, splitting a double-header with Penn State Behrend on Thursday afternoon. The Redhawks dropped Game One 10-0 before riding a big first inning to a 5-1 Game Two victory.

Game 1: Kelsey Plato made a nice running grab to get out of the first inning. The Redhawks went down in order in the bottom of the inning and Behrend grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second. Pitcher Kaylee Grassmyer used a strikeout, flyout to strand a runner on first base.

La Roche registered a hit in the second inning, but the Lions tacked on six more runs in the third. Behrend added runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a ten run lead.

Andie Lippman made a terrific running grab to limit damage in the fifth inning, but Behrend held on for the 10-0 five inning victory.

Game 2:

Starting pitcher Alexa Young tossed a scoreless first inning. The Redhawks got things going offensively in the bottom of the inning.

Ashley Burford reached on an error and advance to third on an Andie Lippman bloop single. Aubrie Martin was hit by a pitch and Plato doubled into right for a 2-0 lead. Savannah Leonard then smoked a 2-run double into the left field gap. Kelsey Bayer followed with a triple to the right field wall and a five run lead.

Young struck out the final two batters to strand runners at first and second base in the second inning. Behrend got one back in the third, but Young again stranded runners at first and second.

Third baseman Alexis Medva made a terrific defensive play in the fourth inning. La Roche was threatening in the fifth but left a runner at second base.

The Redhawks' bats slowed, but Young continued to make her way through Behrend's lineup. She tossed a scoreless sixth inning which was aided with a swiping tag by first baseman Savannah Leonard.

Young sent the Lions down in order in the seventh to earn her fourth victory of the year. She did not allow an earned run over seven innings and struck out 5 batters.

Plato and Leonard each hit in a pair and Bayer had an RBI. Burford, Lippman, Martin, Plato, and Leonard all scored runs.
