Redhawks Split at Thiel, Plato Knocks in Six

GREENVILLE, PA -- The La Roche College softball team split a double-header at Thiel on Monday afternoon. The Redhawks won Game 1 13-1 before falling in the late game 8-0.

La Roche swung a hot bat in their first game outside of South Carolina. They scored in all but the fourth inning and overcame a late deficit to win 13-11.

Kelsey Plato helped the Redhawks strike first, belting her first career home run over the left field wall and a 2-0 lead. Thiel got one back in the bottom of the first. Starting pitcher Alexa Young limited the damage, stranding runners at second and third with three straight outs.

La Roche broke out for five runs in the top of the second inning. Devan Smith led off with a single and scored on a Sydnee Deshong double to left. Aubrie Martin and Plato followed with RBI singles and Kelsey Bayer a two-run double.

Plato registered her fifth RBI in the third inning. Deshong and Burford led off with singles and Plato hit a 2-out single to score both and take a 9-1 lead.

Young tossed scoreless frames in the second, third and fourth innings. Devan Smith added a run in the fifth but Thiel put up a ten spot in the bottom of the inning for an 11-10 advantage.

The Redhawks responded to take back the lead in the sixth. Deshong and Burford again led off with singles. Martin tied it with a ground out and Plato hit a liner into center for a 12-11 lead.

Devan Smith added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Kaylee Grassmyer entered in relief and stranded a runner at third for the win.

Plato went 5 for 5 with 6 RBI and 2 runs. Burford had 5 hits and scored 4 runs.

La Roche struggled from the plate in Game 2, falling 8-0 (5 innings) and failing to register a hit.

A majority of the damage came in the second inning when Thiel scored five runs on five hits. They added a 2-run triple in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth inning.

The Redhawks will open AMCC Conference play on Thursday at Penn State Altoona.
