PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche men's soccer showed grit and determination across 90 minutes, as a pair of first half goals was plenty to take down Penn State Altoona, 2-1, for the first time since 2020 and for the first victory of the 2024 season.
It was at the 14:27 mark of the first half when Austin Emery found fellow freshman Jayden Fezatte on a free kick, with Fezatte tucking it past the keeper to make it a 1-0 game.
Emery wasn't done there, as he would score the insurance goal the Redhawks would need at 25:04, unassisted to give a 2-0 edge to the red and black.
The lone goal scored by the Lions came just 29 seconds after Emery's.
La Roche locked in defensively over the final 64:27, limiting chances for Penn State Altoona and sealing the victory.
The Redhawks ended the game with seven shots, just two off the Lions' nine, while each team had five shots on goal.
Fezatte and Emery led the team with a pair of shots, with Emery placing both on net for the team high in that category.
Maddox Anderson was great in net, as the keeper stopped four of the five shots he faced.
La Roche looks to make the victory a streak on Saturday, Oct. 5, when the Redhawks welcome Penn State Harrisburg for the final non-conference fixture of the season. Opening kick is set for 4 p.m.
