Late Goal Lifts Lions Past Redhawks

ALTOONA, PA -- The La Roche men's soccer team dropped an AMCC Conference game to Penn State Altoona on Tuesday evening. The Redhawks fell 2-1 and now sit at 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the AMCC.

The Redhawks were just inches away from taking a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. La Roche held possession in the Lions' zone and won a corner kick at the 1:20 mark. Ximo Vicent sent a high arcing corner to Pedro Ansede but his header was denied by the crossbar.

Ansede got another chance just a minute later and this time the Redhawks capitalized. Ansede fired a shot to draw Penn State Altoona goalkeeper Tanner Yaw out of the net. An alert Tom Spagnolo controlled the rebound and chipped it past Yaw for an early 1-0 lead.

La Roche nearly doubled their lead just before halftime. Peter Kuir headed a Vicent corner kick past Yaw but an Altoona player was in the right place at the right time to make the stop.

The Redhawks continued to fire shots on net and they won seven corner kicks in the game. Penn State Altoona hung around and found the equalizer on a free kick in the sixty-third minute. La Roche responded by firing three shots in less than a minute but an own goal allowed the Lions to grab the lead. The Redhawks outshot Altoona 4-1 down the stretch but they were unable to tie it up.

La Roche outshot Altoona 17-16 including 9-4 in shots on goal. They also attempted four more corner kicks.

The Redhawks will travel to Medaille on Saturday for a conference night game. Kick-off is 6pm.
