
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche men's basketball picked up its second straight win with a thrilling 91-87 victory over Hilbert on Saturday.
It was even early, but by 15:09 to go, it was the visiting Hawks who opened up a 15-8 lead.
With 12:57 left, the Redhawks battled back with a 9-2 run to tie the game, then by the midway point, opened a 23-19 lead of their own.
As the clock read 4:13 remaining, the red and black were ahead 37-28, but Hilbert would fight back to trail just 44-40 at the half.
Out of the break, the Hawks managed to catch up to La Roche, tying the game, 48-48.
However, by the midway point, the Redhawks opened another edge of eight points, 68-60, but yet again, Hilbert cut the deficit back to 75-73 with 5:21 to go in regulation.
From that point on, La Roche wouldn't allow their lead to be any closer than three and sealed the victory for its sixth in the last seven games.
For the game, the Redhawks finished 34-for-72 (47.2%) from the floor and 11-for-32 (34.4%) from three. From the foul line, they made 12 of 17 attempts (70.6%).
On the other side, Hilbert finished 33-for-63 (52.4%) from the field, 10-for-27 (37%) from deep and 11-for-14 (78.6%) from the free-throw stripe.
The Redhawks had five players finish in double figures, led by Joe Starzynski.
Starzynski became the 17th member of the La Roche men's basketball 1,000-point club, scoring 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting, while earning a double-double with 10 rebounds, five assists and a pair of blocks.
Dominic Elliot followed with 18 points and five rebounds, while Isaiah Thomas netted 16 points with five rebounds of his own.
Michael Brooks and Major Rainey both contributed 10 points, with Brooks adding four assists and Rainey with five rebounds.
La Roche continues its brief home stretch on Wednesday, Feb. 12 when they welcome Pitt-Greensburg to the KFC. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
