DELAWARE, Ohio – La Roche men's basketball saw itself fall by single digits for the second striaght game to open the season, falling to Ohio Wesleyan 70-63.
It took nearly two minutes for the first basket of the game to fall, that went the way of the Battling Bishops and by the midway point of the first half, the score sat at 13-5 in favor of the hosts.
La Roche would cut the deficit with a 5-0 run to 13-10 with 8:46 remaining, but continued to trail thoughout the half, including by as many as 11 points, after Ohio Wesleyan used an 8-0 across 2:35, eventually holding a 31-25 lead at the half.
Out of the break, the deficit grew back to double-digits for the red and black, falling behind 39-29, but then things clicked for a moment.
The Redhawks found a rhythm, utilizing an 11-0 run that spanned 3:35 to take their first lead of the game, 40-39, with 12:23 remaining.
The teams battled back and forth, but La Roche still clung onto a one-point, 52-51 lead with 4:40 to go, but the Battling Bishops used a 7-0 run to re-open a six-point edge with 2:53 left in the game, and the Redhawks only managed to come within two just shortly after as Ohio Wesleyan sealed the victory.
For the game, La Roche finished going 26-for-57 (45.6%) from the floor and 7-for-21 (33.3%) from three. From the foul line, they capitalized on four of five attempts (80%).
On the other side, the Battling Bishops finished 25-for-62 (40.3%) from the field, 3-for-25 (12%) from deep, but won the game from the foul line, capitalizing on 17 of the 19 attempts they had (89.5%).
The Redhawks had two players in double figures, led by Michael Brooks with 11 points, three rebounds, four assists, one steal and a block.
Joe Starzynski ended the night with 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.
La Roche concludes its three-game road trip to open the season on Wednesday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Cleveland to face Case Western Reserve. Opening tip is slated for 7 p.m.
