Redhawks Downed By #13 Spartans In Non-Conference Action

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche men's basketball welcomed #13 Case Western Reserve on Wednesday for a non-conference clash, but in the end it was the notionally ranked Spartans toppling the Redhawks 78-58.

A 4-0 run in the opening two minutes of the game for La Roche was the only led of the night, as CWRU countered with a 16-4 run to open a 16-8 lead just before the midway point of the first half.

The Redhaws battled to trim the deficit to 21-19 with 9:10 remaining, and were still within three points with 7:41 remaining, until the Spartans opened a 12 point, 38-26 lead with 3:06 remaining, before ultimately taking a 42-34 lead into the locker room.

Out of the half, La Roche came as close as seven points at 44-37 in the first 1:40 of the second half, and still held the deficit under double digits at 47-39 just a minute later.

A cold spell fell on the Redhawks, going 5:39 without making a shot from the field, only making two free-throws in that stretch, but still with 9:05 remaining after a trio of layups still trailed by only 10 at 57-47.

Unfortunately, another cold spell from 7:35-4:41 fell on La Roche and this time CWRU opened the game up, taking a 68-51 lead, leading to the eventual 78-58 final.

For the game, La Roche finished the night going 21-for-63 (33.3%) from the floor, and 7-for-27 (25.9%) from three. From the foul line, the Redhawks capitalized on nine of 14 attempts.

On the other side, the Spartans finished 28-for-73 (38.4%) from the field, and 11-for-31 (35.5%) from deep, while going 11-for-14 from the foul line.

It was the rebounding that helped CWRU throughout the night, outrebounding the Redhawks 51-29, including 22-9 on the offensive boards.

La Roche was led offensively by junior Michael Brooks who ended the game with 15 points, four rebounds, three blocks and a pair of assists.

Senior Frank Stumpo was the only other La Roche player to hit double figures, scoring 12 points behind 4-for-7 shooting from three.

The Redhawks return to the floor for a pair of games this weekend in the Great Lakes Invitational in Springfield, Ohio. First up is #25 Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday, Nov. 17. Opening tip is slated for 1 p.m.
