Men's Basketball Crowned AMCC Champions; Earns AMCC's Bid into NCAA Tournament

PITTSBURGH, PA - Early this afternoon the Men's basketball team of La Roche University defeated the Penn State Altoona Lions 84-61. With this victory, not only were they deemed regular season champions, but also the AMCC Tournament Champions, earning the team the AMCC's bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Redhawks are going dancing!

At the beginning of the contest, the Lions and the Redhawks were trading points back and forth, with a different team taking the lead every time the ball found its way into the net.

Devon Darrell's shots found their way into the hoop tonight more than any other Redhawks'. The senior shot 60% from deep, and came up just one short of a perfect free throw record for the night. All in all, Darrell finished his last game on his home court with 27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block.

La Roche was finally able to pull away towards the end of the first half, a major reason for this was how tight the Redhawks were playing defense this afternoon. The Redhawks earned 19 points from turnovers, and 19 points from second chances.

Crashing the boards was Joe Pipilo. Pipilo led in rebounds with 9, in addition to his 13 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Jordan Grayson once again stepped up for the team. The senior netted 3 three-point shots and took it to the hoop to earn a chance on the foul line. He came up with 14 points on the night, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block.

The contest saw 5 lead changes and 2 ties over the course of 40 minutes, with La Roche claiming the lead for 31 minutes of those 40 total minutes. A large help to achieve this win came from Isaiah Thomas who netted 10 points, snagged 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block.
Joe Starzynski and Desmond Ross each netted 8 points to help secure the team the AMCC Title.

La Roche will find out where they're headed this weekend on Monday. The Men's Basketball Division III selection show will premiere Monday, at 1 PM, on ncaa.org.
