Preview: Men's Basketball vs. Medaille

McCANDLESS, Pa - La Roche men's basketball hosts Medaille College this Saturday, January 25th at the Kerr Fitness Center. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. The Redhawks defeated the Mavericks earlier this season at Medaille, 90-79.

La Roche (OVR: 11-6, AMCC: 11-1)

Last Time Out: The Redhawks took down Penn St. Altoona on the road Wednesday evening, 83-63. According to Head Coach Hermie Carmichael, "it was our most complete game of the season thus far." The Redhawks shot at an efficient rate, especially in the second half where they knocked 59% (16-27) of their shots from the floor and 44% (7-16) from three-point range. Six different Redhawks finished in double-digit scoring figures led by Darius Lawrence who finished with 16 points, five assists and five steals (season-high) while shooting 60% (6-10) from the floor. Tyler Frederick scored 10 of his 15 total points in the second half and added eight rebounds, a steal and a block. Kennedy Smith was all over the stat sheet, finishing with 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and a season-high five steals. LRU did struggle from the line, making just 12 of 22 (55%) free throws.

News and Notes

  • LRU has won three in a row and 10 of their last 11 contests. At 11-1 in conference play, the Redhawks are at the top of the AMCC standings and a full game up on Pitt Greensburg.
  • La Roche has attempted over 30 three-pointers in each of their last three games, shooting a combined 36% (35-97) from deep and draining at least 11 triples in each contest. In their first 14 games of the season, the Redhawks never attempted more than 29 treys.
  • Darius Lawrence has led La Roche in scoring four of their last six games, averaging 16.8 points per game during that span. Lawrence has also knocked down 35 of his last 40 (88%) free-throws.

  • After winning four straight conference games, the Mavericks have gone 2-2 in their last four contests.
  • Most recently, Medaille took down Hilbert College 73-68 on Jan. 22.
  • The Mavericks have four scorers who average over 12 points per game led by Kirk Hawkins with 18.4 (2nd in AMCC). Hawkins is also the teams main distributor, averaging a team high 4.1 assists per game.
  • 6'5 Senior forward Jonathan Smith is second in the conference in rebounds per game (9.6), fifth in points per game (16.9) and 9th in field goal percentage (53.7%).
  • In AMCC action, Medaille has averaged 81.4 points per game (4th in AMCC).

SAAC FOR SOCKS: Fans are encouraged to donate new or gently used socks, hats, gloves and other winter items for local homeless shelters during their time of need from now until February 2nd. Donation bins will be placed at the entrance of the Kerr . In just the first week, donations have already begun pouring in.
