Preview: Men's Basketball Faces Penn St. Behrend in AMCC Game of the Week

ERIE, Pa. - The Redhawks will play in their second AMCC Game of the Week this season on Saturday, January 11th at Penn St. Behrend. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday's contest will be the first time the teams have played each other since last years conference title game.

La Roche (OVR: 7-5, AMCC: 7-0)

Last Time Out: The Redhawks extended their win streak to six games Wednesday evening after taking down Alfred St. on the road, 75-62. After being tied with the Pioneers halfway through the first, LRU put together a 16-0 run to pull away from the host team and never looked back. The Redhawks were able to maintain a double-digit lead for a majority of the rest of the game, dipping below the mark for only a minute and 45 seconds at the start of the second half. Senior guard Darius Lawrence (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) led all scorers with 18 points while shooting 6 of 9 (67%) from the field and 1 of 2 (50%) from three-point range. It is the first game this season Lawrence has led the Redhawks in points. The veteran guard added 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Tyler Frederick recorded his fifth straight double-double in the contest posting 15 points and 11 rebounds.

  • LRU remains the only undefeated team in league play with a 7-0 conference record, placing them atop the AMCC standings. Three other teams in the conference, including Penn St. Behrend, are only one game back of the first place Redhawks. 
  • La Roche has won each of their seven conference games by 11 points or more. 
  • The Redhawks have won 27 straight regular season conference games dating back to the 2017-18 season.

Junior forward Tyler Frederick has been on a tear as of late, winning back-to-back AMCC Athlete of the Week honors (12/23 & 1/6) and becoming just the second student-athlete in the conference this season and the first Redhawk since 2015 to be named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Player of the Week (1/7). Frederick has notched five straight double-doubles and currently leads the AMCC in points per game (20.8) and rebounds per game (12.2). His rebounds per game mark ranks 8th in D-III.

News and Notes

  • The Lions extended their win streak to five straight on Wednesday (1/9) when they defeated Pitt-Bradford, 78-47.
  • Junior guard Mitchell King led Behrend against the Panthers with a career-high 16 points.
  • Sophomore forward PJ Gourley also added 16 points and junior forward Nolan Nuara had a season-best eight rebounds.
  • Sophomore Trent Walker had a career-best eight points on the night.
  • The Lions are 8-2 in their last 10 contests.
  • Behrend leads the AMCC in field-goal percentage (49.3) and has given up the least amount of points (777).

  • The last time the conference powerhouses faced one-another was in last year's AMCC Title Game. The Lions bested the Redhawks 67-65 at the Kerr Fitness Center.
