Wolverines Down Redhawks in Game 1 at Geneva

BUTLER, Pa. - Men's basketball attempted a season-high 74 shots in a losing effort to Grove City in Game 1 of the Geneva "Coaches vs. Cancer" Tournament. La Roche, now 0-3 on the season, shot 37% from the field while thier opponents shot a season best 54%. The Wolverines, however, only made three more total field goals. Tonight's win is GCC's first of the season.

Highlights

La Roche once again relied heavily on their upperclassmen for offensive production. Senior guard Kennedy Smith collected career-high's in points (20) and rebounds (16). This season, Smith is averaging 15.3 points per game (third on team). Senior Darius Lawrence also scored a career-high with 19 points and shot a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line. Junior Austin Hannes finished with 13 points on the night. Individually, the trio has scored 10+ in all three game his season. 

LRU remained competitive throughout the first half, owning the lead twice, and went into the second half down only 33-38. 

The Redhawks came out hot in the second half going on a 12-2 run to go up 45-40. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, the score was even at 53 points a piece. 

GCC then went on a 7-0 run and never looked back. La Roche shot 3-13 from the field in the last five minutes of the game.

LRU committed 28 personal fouls, allowing GCC to score over 20% of their points from the line (23-36 FT; 64%). 

The Redhawks shot a season-low 4-18 (22%) from beyond the arc. Their opponents knocked down one less 3-PT on ten less attempts (3-8).

Without Junior Tyler Frederick, La Roche was out rebounded for the first time all year, 39-48 in favor of Grove City. 

The Wolverines bench outscored the Redhawks 24-6. 

GCC scored over half their points (48) inside the paint.
