La Roche Responds in Win Against Calvin

La Roche Responds in Win Against Calvin

Holland, MI -- The La Roche Men's Basketball team (9-2, 5-0) won tonight in their second game of the Great Lakes Invitational and Russ Devette Holiday Classic by a score of 74-68 over Calvin College (5-7). The theme of the whole tournament was the Redhawks ability to respond on stops and scores. In tonight's game, the Redhawks made the last stop count to put away the Knights. Zach Gould and Tyler Frederick were named to the All Tournament Team.

Each team's forwards led the way in the early going. Tyler Frederick and Derrick Deveries of Calvin exchanged baskets as Calvin built an early lead (10-7).

Zach Gould answered with a three. Shawn Dunnings brought energy off the bench for a second consecutive night, allowing La Roche to take their first lead five minutes later (17-14).

The end of the first half was problematic for La Roche as they got into foul trouble. Calvin owned the offensive glass, which led to field goals or free throws on seven of the final nine possessions in the period and the lead at halftime (39-35).

In what could be a critical moment of their season, La Roche struggled out of the lockerroom. Calvin continued to thrive offensively with a quick 6-0 run which pushed the lead to ten (45-35). The game hovered around this margin as La Roche attempted to find answers to Deveries and their cold shooting for the final ten minutes (55-46).

La Roche ignited their biggest response when an Austin Hannes three pointer followed by a Frederick old fashion and one got the offense going. Simultaneously, a switch in defenses kept the Knights on their heels. The deflections and pressure led to transition scores leading a furious rally capped off by a Zach Gould three to bring the score to just two (55-53).

A final Gould three pointer as well as a clutch pull up from Ray Quan Phifer gave La Roche the lead back with three minutes remaining (67-64). A handful of free throws and rebounds earned La Roche a win and a split in a well-deserved Great Lake Invitational invite. Final score 74-68.

Individual stats for La Roche included All Tournament Selections of Tyler Frederick and his 17 points and 9 rebounds and Zach Gould 19 points and (5-7) from three. Ray Quan Phifer finished with 17 points to go with 3 steals.

La Roche will return home to play their final game before the holiday as John Carroll will make the trip to Pittsburgh on Saturday, December 22 at 1pm.
