CRESSON, Pa. – La Roche baseball took on Mt. Aloysius on Thursday afternoon, but were unable to get past the reigning AMCC Regular Season Champions, falling in both games of the twin-bill.
GAME ONE: Mt. Aloysius 7 La Roche 3
Mt. Aloysius would strike immediately in the bottom of the first, off a two RBI single to lead 2-0.
Ricky Heyz had a response for the Redhawks in the top of the second, tying the game at 2-2 with a two RBI single of his own.
The Mounties would unfortunately score what would be the winning run in a three-run, bottom of the third, behind another two RBI single and a La Roche error to go ahead, 5-2.
Mt. Aloysius tacked one more run in the fourth with an RBI double and the Redhawks final run scored in the top of the fifth, when Tanner Schmitt delivered an RBI single.
The Mounties would close the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, making it the eventual final of 7-3 with a sacrifice fly.
Bryson Bubb got the start and in the complete game, allowing seven runs (six earned), 10 hits, two walks and struck out five.
Offensively, La Roche picked up six hits, led by Christian Melendez's 2-for-3 outing.
GAME TWO: Mt. Aloysius 11 La Roche 10
It was all Redhawks to open game two, scoring in innings two and three.
One run came across in the top of the second off a Dom Brncic RBI single, then in a five-run, third inning, Josh Dreyer doubled in the first run, followed by a Schmitt RBI single, then a Tyler Smith three-run homer to build a 6-0 lead.
The Mounties would cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third, plating three runs in the frame, but the La Roche bats stayed hot, as Andy Sopata and Smith brought home runs with a bases loaded hit by pitch and a walk to make it 8-3.
Once again, Mt. Aloysius battled back, putting five runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, the exact same way the Redhawks did in the top of the third to tie the game 8-8.
Dreyer would pull through yet again to give the lead back to the red and white in the top of the fifth with an RBI single, and after three scoreless innings, Melendez added insurance in the top of the ninth with an RBI single of his own.
Unfortunately, the Mounties had one last attack left in them, first scoring on a Redhawk error, then a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 10-10.
Mt. Aloysius would then win in walk-off fashion, with an RBI single to steal the series sweep.
Chris Tarquinio got the start, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) and nine hits.
Caden Maffitt tossed 4.2 innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs, two hits, three walks and three strikeouts, while Jimmy Roe threw 0.1 inning, allowing a hit and a walk.
The loss would go to Jared Hough, also throwing 0.1 inning, allowing one unearned run.
Offensively, La Roche ended with nine hits, led by Dreyer's 3-for-5 showing at the dish.
