Redhawks Walk Away Victorious in Extra Inning Play

MEADVILLE, PA - The Redhawks took full advantage of having tomorrow off from conference play and took the opportunity to head to Allegheny College to face the Gators for a single 9-inning game. Little did they know the contest, would be exceeding 9 innings, and La Roche would be the one walking off with the extra-inning win.

The game was scoreless through 8 innings for both teams. Chris Tarquinio started the game on the mound for La Roche and went 8 innings, only giving up 1 run on 4 hits, while striking out 5 Gators.

After battling at the plate, including 3 foul balls, Kyle Weitzel finally got one to straighten out and clear the center field fence for a solo home run, and to put the Redhawks on the board first in the top of the ninth inning.

The team's relief was short-lived however as a double from Allegheny allowed one run to score and the Gators were able to tie the game at 1 and forced another inning of baseball.

In the 10th inning, Nate Darwin got things started, reaching base on a hard ground ball to left field.  Josh Dryer laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Darwin into scoring position at second base. Zach Keib found a ball he liked and turned it into a base hit. Tanner Kobal walked, advancing the runners, putting both Darwin and Keib in the scoring position. Darwin, the winning run was now at third base with only one out.

On a passed ball, Darwin had a large enough lead to make it across home plate and score what would be the winning run.

The Gators put up one last battle in the bottom of the inning. La Roche's Dylan Chan was on the mound as he took over for Tarquinio after the 8th inning. The righty earned the win for the team after he was able to hold on to the Redhawks' lead. Chan over 2 innings allowed only 2 hits and zero runs. He struck out 1 and walked no one.

Weitzel owns the one and only RBI for the day, and Stutz led the team in hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

La Roche will be on the road once more in a matchup against the Franciscan Barons for a 4 PM game on Thursday.
