Redhawks Fall To Lions 3-1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche volleyball hosted Penn State Altoona on Tuesday and despite jumping ahead in the match, were unable to hold on, falling to the Lions 3-1.

 

Falling behind in set one 5-2 was nothing to worry about for the Redhawks an 8-1 run boosted La Roche to a 10-6 lead.

 

Penn State Altoona would trim the deficit to 15-13, but another run, this time a 9-1 run, pushed the Redhawks lead to 24-14 and would close the set with a 25-17 win.

 

Set two saw La Roche continue to hold the momentum, storming ahead 10-5, which then went to 13-9.

 

From there, the Lions would score 11 of 14 points and altogether, 16 of the final 22 to take the set by a final score of 25-19.

 

Set three again saw an early lead for the Redhawks of 7-4, but was again countered by Penn State Altoona with a 9-3 run to take a 13-10 lead.

 

The closest the set came from that point was at 14-13 in favor of the Lions, and despite a late 4-1 run by La Roche to cut the score to 23-20, the teams traded points to give Penn State Altoona a 25-21 set victory.

 

In the final set, the Redhawks again forced the issue early on, taking a 9-5 lead.

 

Once again, the Lions struck to regain the lead, using a 9-1 run to jump ahead 14-10.

 

La Roche used a 5-1 run shortly after to tie the match 16-16, but from that point on, Penn State Altoona scored nine of the set's final 11 points to take the victory.

 

Sophomore Kalli Grine was the team lead on the night, notching 15 kills, while senior Lauren Tomasko followed with nine.

 

Senior Madison Johnson was the team's leader in assists with 23 and added 24 digs for the 20-20 night.

 

Senior Mackenzie Kerkan followed Johnson with 22 digs, while senior Morgan Johnson added 20 of her own.

 

Another senior, Emily Kasun, earned a double-double with 10 assists and 12 digs, while Tomasko added in 14 digs.

 

The Redhawks conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 4 when they host Penn State Behrend. This crucial finale towards playoff seeding is set to begin at 1 p.m.
