Redhawks Make It Five In A Row In 3-1 Victory Over Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – La Roche volleyball traveled to Waynesburg University on Tuesday night and earned its fifth consecutive win for the first time since 2018 with a 3-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

The opening set would go into an extra point, with Waynesburg coming out on top 26-24.

It was the Redhawks who were the early aggressors, jumping out to a 5-1 lead, but after the Yellow Jackets tied it at 5-5, La Roche jumped back ahead 9-5.

Leading 13-10 later, Waynesburg would put together a 6-0 run to take a 16-13 lead and held that lead up to 20-16, until the Redhawks put together a 4-0 run to tie it at 20-20.

The teams traded points and La Roche eventually held set point at 24-23, but it was the Yellow Jackets taking the final three points.

Set two again went into an extra point, this time it was the Redhawks winning 26-24.

This time, Waynesburg was the aggressor, leading 4-1 early and upped it to 14-8 at one point.

After a service error cut the deficit to 14-9, it started what would be a 12-0 run to take over the set and lead 20-14.

The Yellow Jackets wouldn't back down, scoring 10 of the next 14 points to tie the match at 24-24, but a kill from Gianna Zamperini and an attack error by Waynesburg gave the set win to La Roche.

In the third set, the Redhawks took charge, cruising to a 25-16 win.

Close early at 6-4 in favor of La Roche, the Redhawks went on to score 16 of the next 24 to take a commanding 22-12 lead, before finish off the set with a kill by Aislyn Williams.

In the final set, La Roche punctuated the victory, closing out the Yellow Jackets by a score of 25-19.

The Redhawks never trailed in the final set, jumping ahead 6-2 early, while growin the lead to as many as eight points, at 15-7.

Throughout the set, after the first few points, La Roche never allowed Waynesburg to cut the deficit to any closer than three, and to end the night was a kill from Lauren Tomasko.

For the match, sophomore Kalli Grine led the offense again with 10 kills, continuing her stellar play, while Tomasko followed with five kills.

Senior Madison Johnson again led the team with 16 assists, while fellow senior Emily Kasun chipped in nine.

Defensively, senior Mackenzie Kerkan led the team with 32 digs, while Tomasko added 17 and Madison Johnson earned the double-double with 12.

With the win streak sitting at five, the Redhawks are right back on the court on Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they host Franciscan inside the Kerr Fitness Center. Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m.
