La Roche Cruises To 2-0 Day With Pair Of 3-0 Sweeps

ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. – La Roche volleyball traveled to New York and Hilbert College for a pair of games on Saturday, and at the end of the day, went 2-0 with a pair of 3-0 victories over SUNY Potsdam and host Hilbert.

 

GAME 1: LA ROCHE 3 SUNY POTSDAM 0

In the opening match, the Redhawks cruised to a 25-13 victory behind a dominant 15-5 run to start the set, which eventually grew to a game high lead of 21-9.

Set two was much closer, as the final score ended at 25-23.

La Roche started the set leading 10-6, but a 7-0 Potsdam run made it a 13-10 deficit for the Redhawks.

La Roche bounced back to take a 16-15 lead and as time went on, Potsdam would lead late at 23-22, but the Redhawks buckled down and took the final three points for the comeback win.

In the final set, La Roche again charged ahead to a 6-2 lead and continued to cruise to a 19-13 lead.

Despite Potsdam coming back and trimming their deficit to 21-19, the Redhawks again coasted in the end, scoring the final four points to win 25-19.

For the match, sophomore Kalli Grine led the offense with nine kills, followed by senior Lauren Tomasko with six.

Senior Madison Johnson again led the team with 10 assists, while fellow senior Emily Kasun and freshman Tanner Kephart chipped in five each.

Defensively, senior Mackenzie Kerkan led the team with 12 digs.

 

GAME 2: LA ROCHE 3 HILBERT 0

Immediately following game one, La Roche returned to the court to face host Hilbert and once again cruised to a 3-0 victory.

In set one, the Redhawks opened fast, outscoring Hilbert to the tune of 10-3 in a dominant start.

The lead would continue to grow and went to as high as 10 after leading 20-10, before finishing the set with a 25-16 win.

Set two was much of the same early, as La Roche jumped ahead 9-3.

This time around, Hilbert used a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the match, 10-9.

The teams traded leads of no more than two at that point, and when tied 16-16 mid-set, the Redhawks would strike to score nine of the final 10 points to win 25-17.

In the final set, La Roche fell behind 4-1 early, but sparked with a 6-0 run to gain a 7-4 lead, one it wouldn't relinquish.

As the set went on, it was just a 14-12 lead, but the Redhawks went on to score 11 of the final 14 points en route to a 25-15 win.

In match two, Grine again led the way on offense with nine kills, while freshman Aislyn Williams chipped in five kills.

Senior Madison Johnson again led the team with 12 assists, while Kasun added 10 assists.

Defensively, Kerkan led the team with 16 digs and Tomasko also hit double-digits with 10.

Four straight wins is where La Roche sits and they look to make it five in a row when they face Waynesburg on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
