La Roche Drops Pair In Season Opening Double Match

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – La Roche volleyball opened its 2023 season with a two game night, unfortunately falling in both, 3-0 at the hands of Chatham and 3-1 to Lycoming.

In the opening match, against Chatham, it was the Cougars taking charge with set victories of 25-19.

In the third set, the Redhawks (0-2, 0-0 AMCC) were in a back and forth battle, before taking a 12-10 lead.

Despite Chatham regaining the lead, La Roche fought back to lead late in the set 21-19.

Unfortunately for the Redhawks, the Cougars would score seven of the final 10 points to seal the victory.

In the match, senior Lauren Tomasko, junior Quinn Hughes and sophomore Kalli Grine led the way with four kills each, while senior Madison Johnson added eight assists and senior Mackenzie Kerkan had a team best 15 digs.

In the second match of the night, it was La Roche winning a thrilling opening set against Lycoming, 27-25.

After a back-and-forth opening, the Redhawks trailed 11-10 and then sparked with a 6-0 run to take a 16-11 led.

The lead held at 21-18 later on, but Lycoming would utilize a 5-0 run to take a 23-21 lead, countered by a 3-0 La Roche run to set up match point.

The teams would trade points until the score was 25-25 and the Redhawks sealed the set with the final two points.

Set two was strongly in favor of Lycoming who won 25-13, then finished off the night with set wins of 25-22 in the third and 25-21 in the second.

In match two, Tomasko led the charge with six kills, with Hughes and sophomore Gianna Zamperini following with five each.

Madison Johnson again led the team with 14 assists, while Kerkan put together 26 digs, with Tomasko adding 10.

La Roche concludes its time in the Lycoming Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow, Sept. 2 with a matchup against Clarks Summit at 10 a.m.
