Redhawks Fall To Presidents 3-1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche women's soccer concluded its opening weekend with a matchup against Washington & Jefferson, but were unable to top the Presidents, falling 3-1 on Sunday.

Through one half of play, it was quiet for the most part, as the Redhawks (1-1, 0-0 AMCC) played superb defense, limiting the chances W&J had to less than quality ones, with the exception of the lone goal that was scored off a corner kick.

The Presidents would strike in the first 1:30 of the second half to make it 2-0, then again at the 66:45 mark of the half to conclude the scoring for W&J.

La Roche would hit the scoreboard at the 84:10 mark when freshman Finnleigh Gould netted her second of the season, while senior Alexandra Mecchia tallied her second assist of the early campaign.

Altogether, the Presidents led the way with 14 shots in the game, placing eight on the cage. The Redhawks would take four shots on the afternoon and placed three on net, with Gould leading the way with two of the four shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julianna Hornikel made five stops in eight attempts, playing 77:18 between the pipes.

La Roche has a couple days to prepare for its for road contest of the season, when they travel to Waynesburg University to face the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, Sep. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
