D'Youville Holds on to Defeat Redhawks in AMCC Quarterfinal

BUFFALO, NY -- Marissa Johnson cut the deficit to just one in the second half but the Redhawks could not find the equalizer as D'Youville College held on for the victory. D'Youville advances to the AMCC Tournament Semifinal with a 2-1 victory on a rainy and wet Saturday afternoon.

D'Youville struck first as the Redhawks conceded an own goal in the twelfth minute. The Spartans won a corner kick and Magan Magee deflected a high curling cross off a La Roche defender and in for a 1-0 lead.

D'Youville increased the pressure with their second goal just three minutes later. Magee was in on the scoring again heading in a cross inside the six-yard box.

The Redhawks settled in and started playing their brand of soccer. Vanessa Ceravolo and Marissa Johnson provided quality scoring chances late in the first half but D'Youville keeper Megan Dulniak kept the Redhawks scoreless at halftime.

D'Youville held a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks but La Roche held the shot edge.

Coach Lozano had the Redhawks ready to play in the second half and Johnson cut the deficit to just one in the sixty-second minute. D'Youville tried to clear but Johnson stepped in front of the ball and sent a left footed strike over the reaching hand of Dulniak.

La Roche had other opportunities late but D'Youville held on for the 2-1 AMCC Tournament win.

Johnson's goal was her third of the season, most by a defender in over a decade.
