Johnson Strike Propels Redhawks to Win, Orange Denies PK

PITTSBURGH, PA -- Marissa Johnson buried a free kick in the eighty-second minute to break a scoreless tie and lift the Redhawks to a 1-0 win over Franciscan. The Redhawks improve to 4-7-1 overall and 2-2 in the AMCC.

La Roche had a quality chance in the twenty-third minute when Franciscan committed a handball in the box. The Redhawks were awarded a PK but goalkeeper Sarah Luebking made a diving stop to keep it nil-nil.

Franciscan hit the crossbar five minutes later. Goalkeeper Isabelle Orange came out to collect the rebound but a tipped ball led to a scramble that La Roche was eventually able to clear.

Franciscan came up with their own PK in the fortieth minute but Orange picked up a huge diving save. The Barons hit the crossbar again in the forty-third minute and Orange made an over the shoulder save to deny the rebound.

Franciscan found the back of the net in the sixtieth minute but an offsides call negated the score. A ball streamed across the goal line and was cleared by the Redhawks in the seventy-first minute and a Kerri Phillis header was denied in the seventy-ninth.

Johnson broke the scoreless tie with a terrific strike in the eighty-second minute. Sam Chambers earned a free kick just outside the box. Johnson lined up the ball and sent a curling shot into the top left corner of the goal for the victory.

Franciscan held a 22-14 shot advantage but Orange made 12 saves to register the shutout.

The Redhawks host Hilbert College on Saturday in a big conference game. Both teams are tied at 2-2 in the AMCC.
