Late Goal Drops Women's Soccer in Season Opener

PITTSBURGH, PA – West Liberty's Sarah Evans scored two goals including the game-winner in the 85th minute as the La Roche women's soccer team (0-1) dropped a close game to the visiting Hilltoppers (1-1) 2-1 in their season opener.

Bethanie Moreschi tied it in the 24th minute after West Liberty jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Moreschi bent a free kick around the three-person wall and past the goalkeeper to even it at 1-1. Moreschi's goal came just minutes after hitting the crossbar from 25 yards out.

The Lady Redhawks best chance in the second half came whenMarina Mattone made a great play to come up with a rebound but barely missed a shot left of the net. Emily Irwin andMorgan Whitney also had quality shots in the second half.

Despite the loss, the Lady Redhawks outshot West Liberty and attempted more corner kicks. Moreschi recorded her 53rdcareer goal and Maria DiPerna and Destiney Davis combined for 10 saves.

La Roche women's soccer will look to rebound on Tuesday when they travel to Penn State Beaver. The Lady Redhawks return to La Roche on Monday, September 10 when they host Geneva College.
