Redhawks Rewrite Record Book In Dominating Win Over Wells

AURORA, N.Y. – La Roche women's basketball dominated its first game of 2024, taking down Wells, 112-18 in the Wednesday afternoon matchup on a record setting day.

The Redhawks set a number of records, including most points in a single game, topping the 100 mark for the 14th time overall. La Roche also set a program benchmark with 51 field goals made on the day, largest victory margin at 94, fewest field goals allowed in a game (6) and lowest field goal percentage allowed in a game (12.5%)

The records don't stop there, as Machia Hairston set a program record with 56 points. It's the sixth most points all-time in a game in NCAA Division III, only the second 50-point game across DIII in the last six years and the most in a game across all NCAA divisions this season. She also set the program benchmark with 26 field goals made in the contest.

Breanna Clemons also set a program record, corralling 22 rebounds, while Angelina Cortazzo ripped away 10 steals, matching the program record held by Danasha Harris, who achieved the 10 steal feat twice.

It was all Redhawks from the onset, who jumped out to a 6-0 lead, then after the first bucket from the Express, used a 15-0 run to lead 21-2. After a Wells three, La Roche closed the opening quarter with a 10-1 run to lead 31-6.

The Redhawks opened the second quarter with the first four points, then after a pair of baskets by the Express, La Roche dominated down the stretch with a 19-2 run to take a 54-12 lead into the half.

Out of the break, it was all Redhawks, outscoring Wells 24-2 in the third quarter and 34-4 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory

For the game, La Roche shot 58.6% (51-for-87) from the floor and 2-for-14 (14.3%) from deep. From the charity stripe, they went 8-for-16 (50%).

On the other side, the Express went on to shoot just 12.5% (6-for-48) from the field, 2-for-23 (8.7%) from three and 4-for-11 (36.4%) from the free-throw line.

Four Redhawks hit double-figures, all of which earned double-doubles.

Hairston's 56 points led the way to go alongside 18 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

Makayla Abram netted 15 points and secured 13 rebounds, while Cortazzo earned her double-double with 15 points and 10 steals to go with six assists.

Clemons and her program record 22 rebounds went along with 13 points, four assists and five steals.

La Roche returns home for the first time since Dec. 2, on Saturday, Jan. 6 when it hosts Hilbert. Opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
