La Roche Clinches First Tournament Game

Washington, PA- Today the Lady Redhawks traveled to Washington and Jefferson to compete in the Springhill Suites Tip-Off Tournament. 

The Redhawks walked away with an earned victory against Case Western Reserve (CWR); the final score 72-63. 

LRU started Makayla Abram, Danajah Sanders, Machia Hairston, Ayanna Mazyck, and Shaundrea Butler. 

For CWR Kayla Characklis, McKenna Gross, Isabella Mills, Lucy Vanderbeck, and Abbey Lawrence.

 

In the first quarter things were a little touch and go for La Roche. This went as far as CWR collecting an eight point lead on the Redhawks before the team settled in and around each other to start pushing their own game. 

LRU was able to take the lead with a minute and 20 seconds remaining in the first period with a layup from Machia Hairston, assisted by Danajah Sanders. Ayanna Mazyck made sure they maintained it by adding a made jumpshot of her own. 

La Roche entered the second period with a lead of 17-14. 

 

During the second quarter both teams put up a fight. Both La Roche and Case Western Reserve added 19 points to their overall score. 

Abram led the Redhawks with eight points in the period. 

Mills for the Spartans added nine points. 

Both teams went into the locker room knowing that the battle wasn't one by either side, not by a long shot.

 

When the Spartans and the Redhawks both came back after half time ready to rumble.

Sanders, for LRU, had two steals, and Butler led the half with six points. 

For CWR Lawrence led her team with 11 points in the quarter. 

During the period, the Spartans put 17 points on the board. The Redhawks put 15.

 

When the fourth quarter came and the Redhawks came to the court they were ready to lock down and take this win, and advance to the championship game of the tournament. 

La Roche came to the floor and really refined their play and earned 21 points. This was their highest scoring quarter throughout the entire game.
The leader for this quarter was Danajah Sanders with 11 points. 

 

At the end of the game the leaders for CWR were Abbey Lawrence with 31 points, six rebounds, and one steal. 

Behind her was Isabella Mills with 17 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block. 

For La Roche, Danajah Sanders was the leading scorer for the Redhawks with 18 points, five steals, three rebounds, and three assists. 

Makayla Abram and Ayanna Mazyck were right behind Sanders, both with 16 points. 

Shaundrea Butler was the leader in rebounds with six, as well as three assists and two steals. 

 

Tomorrow the Redhawks will face off against Washington & Jefferson in the tournament championship game at 3:00 PM.
