Lady Redhawks Dominate Geneva in Home Opener

Pittsburgh, PA- The Lady Redhawks took on the Golden Tornadoes for their home opener and walked away with a victory. 

The Tornadoes started Isabella Roth (guard), Anna Hampshire (guard), Emily Bucheit (guard), Tess Liggett (guard), and Cynthia Stewart (guard). 

Starting for the Redhawks were Makayla Abram (forward), Danajah Sanders (guard), Machia Hairston (guard), Ayanna Mazyck (guard), and Shaundrea Butler (guard). 

First Quarter 

The first quarter started out quickly for La Roche, as they quickly took a 13 point lead. Geneva scored their first basket at 4:41, a three point shot by Taylor Haring. 

The only other scorer for the Golden Tornadoes was Cynthia Score who sank a free throw. 

Scoring for the Redhawks in the first period are as follows: Nia Thomas with six points, Ayanna Mazyck with five points, Makayla Abram, Danajah Sanders, Machia Hairston, and Dasha Jackson each contributed four points. Shaundrea Butler had a made three-point shot to end the period. 

Second Quarter

The second period was Geneva's highest scoring period with a total of 25 points. The leading scorers for this period were Hampshire and Haring tied for 5 points each, Taylor Jackson with four points, three points for Abby King, Isabella Roth, and Mia San Nicolas tied for two points each, and finally Shannon Wolfe contributed one point. 

The Redhawks continued to add to their lead as the quarter went on. Abrams added 12 more points, Alexis Robinson adding six, Hairston with five, Yoder with four, and DJ Whittington with two points. LRU earned a total of 29 points during the quarter. 

The score going into half time was 59-29 in favor of the Rehawks. 

Third Quarter 

The third quarter put the Golden Tornadoes back into their scoring rut with only Anna Hampshire (2 points), and Taylor Jackson (four points). 

The Rehawks stayed very consistent and also scored 29 points during this quarter. 

Robinson led the scoring this period with eight points. Mazyck followed closely behind with six, Abram had four more points, as did Dasha' Jackson. Angelicah Diallo, Janessa Goins, and Danajah Sanders rounded out the quarter with two points. Nia Thomas put the cherry on top, adding a free throw to the score. 

Fourth Quarter 

In the fourth quarter the Tornadoes found their stride again, adding 22 points to their score. 

Isabella Roth, and Lily Ybarra each had five points, Elise De Jong made a three point field goal, and Stewart, San Nicoles, and Haring each added a bucket. Wolfe contributed one made free throw. 

La Roche tied with Geneva in scoring in this period, also adding 22 points to their overall score. 

Sanders and Breyana Buxton each contributed six points. Diallo and Yoder each had four points, Hairston rounded it out with a made layup. 

The final score of the game was La Roche with 110 and Geneva with 57. 

Final Thoughts 

The leading scorers for the Tornadoes were Taylor Haring who had 10 points, two assists and one rebound. Taylor Jackson, who also contributed 10 points, Isabella Roth and Anna Hampshire each had seven points. Roth also added three rebounds to her stats sheet. Finally, the leading rebounder for GC was Mia San Nicolas with four defensive rebounds, and four offensive rebounds. 

The Redhawks top three leading scorers were Makayla Abram with 20 points, and seven rebounds. Alexis Robinson with 14 points, three assists, and two steals. Danajah Sanders also contributed 12 points, five assists and five rebounds. Ayanna Mazyck and Dasha Sanders also contributed eight rebounds for LRU. 

Up next for the Redhawks is the Spring Hill Suites Tip-Off Tournament. Their first game takes place on November 19th at 6:00 PM. 

The next home game for La Roche is on December 8th against Pitt-Greensburg at 5:30 PM.
