Redhawks Clinch Victory Over Barons

The women's basketball team defeated the Franciscan Barons on the road Thursday night. With a final score of 68-62, the hawks move to 13-8 overall and 12-3 in the conference.

Jenna Cole, Shaundrea Butler, and Danajah Sanders all contributed in the first quarter with 7, 2, and 6 points respectively. They entered the second quarter down 3 against the Barons, 15-18.

12 seconds into the second quarter, Danajah Sanders evened the score 18-18 with a three-point jump shot. The next two shots by Dasja Anderson brought the Redhawks up by one, 22-21. The teams went point for point with each other, but two shots by Nia Thomas separated the Hawks from the Barons by 4 points to make the score 29-25.

With a minute and forty seconds left in the second quarter, the Barons tied the score 32-32, but Nia Thomas answered with a three-point shot to help the Redhawks keep their lead. Another three-point shot from Shaundrea Butler took it to halftime at 37-34.

Eight seconds into the third, Nia Thomas nailed a three pointer to start the Redhawks out strong, and a layup from Dasja Anderson brought the score to 42-35 in favor of La Roche. The Redhawks really pulled ahead on the scoreboard getting 6 points in the next two minutes while the Barons could only put up 2. For the rest of the third, La Roche led with the Barons trailing not far behind, and they entered the fourth with a score of 52-49.

A minute and a half passed in the fourth quarter and the Barons were able to bypass La Roche by two points, but a layup by Dalezsa Regan tied the score 56-56. Both teams went shot for shot, keeping the score close. With a minute and twenty seconds left in the fourth, the Redhawks kicked it in to high gear, scoring 8 points and only allowing the Barons to put up two for the rest of the fourth. The final score was 68-62.

Jenna Cole and Nia Thomas led in points with 18 points each, and Dasja Anderson was close behind with 13, followed by Danajah Sanders with 12.

The Redhawks are back in action Saturday February 9 at 2 p.m. at home against Medaille.
