Mt. Aloysius Upends La Roche in AMCC Game of the Week

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The La Roche women's basketball team fell two games back in the AMCC after dropping the Conference Game of the Week. The Redhawks are now 5-7 and 3-2 in the AMCC after Wednesday night's 67-59 defeat against Mt. Aloysius. 

La Roche was the better shooting team, hitting 24 of 59 shots to Mt. Aloysius' 21 of 67 performance. The Mounties however converted thirteen more free throws and held a significant advantage on the offensive glass. 

Jazmyne Boyd led the Redhawks with 13 points while Darrian Johnson had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Nia Thomas had 9 points, Dalesza Regan 6 rebounds and Shaundrea Butler 5 assists.

Mt. Aloysius opened the game on a 5-0 run but the Redhawks found their footing, scoring 10 of the next 12 points. Jenna Cole broke the scoreless drought and Boyd capped the run with a three.

Over the next five minutes, La Roche widened the gap and a Sidney Farmer three put the Redhawks ahead by eight. They entered the first intermission with a 21-15 lead.

The Redhawks again struggled early in the second quarter. They were held without a basket over the first four minutes as Mt. Aloysius took a 22-21 lead.

La Roche took back the lead with a Nicole Boda three and the Redhawks maintained a small lead. They held a six point advantage late in the second quarter but the Mounties closed the half on an 8-2 run and both teams entered the lockerroom tied at 34-34.

Boyd scored 9 first half points and Johnson added 7 rebounds.

Johnson hit an early second half three as La Roche took a 41-38 advantage. Mt. Aloysius answered with nine straight points but the Redhawks were able to get it back to two with 2:45 left in the third quarter.

The Mounties used another nine point run to take control and earn the eight point win. 

Johnson scored nine second half points.

The Redhawks will host Penn State Altoona on Saturday at 4pm. The Lions currently sit one game back of La Roche with a 2-3 conference record.
